A Sign For Remembrance, 2011, was created as a permanent sign that was installed outside Josip Broz Tito’s nuclear bunker, a few meters away from its entrance (and exit). It took almost 30 years to build and furnish the bunker to ensure the safety and survival of Tito and a selection of 350 family members and army generals in case of a nuclear attack. The sign, too, responds to the possibility of a nuclear attack becoming a reality. As the world outside the bunker lays in ruins after a nuclear attack had wiped out all that we knew and built, the chosen few emerge from the bunker to repopulate the land and start a reenactment of all known history. The sign greets them with the message: “Let Us Build A Monument To Remind Us Of Our Futuristic Past”, a possible reference to the many futuristic monuments that were commissioned by Tito himself in the 1960s and 70s, some of which are now nothing but ruins.
